Detect Cancer Early

October 18, 2020

Aged 50 - 74? A simple bowel test could save your life. Screening for cancer means finding early cancer before symptoms develop. Screening does not diagnose cancer - it identifies people who need more tests to find out if cancer is present. Early detection of bowel cancer significantly improves the chances of successful treatment. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program  invites eligible people starting at age 50 and continuing to age 74 (without symptoms) to screen for bowel cancer using a free, simple test at home. If you participate in the program, your results will be sent to you and your nominated doctor in the mail.  Most people that are tested are likely to have a negative result (93%).

$300,000 Rural General Practice Grant

July 27, 2017

Southern Forests Medical Centre has been awarded $300,000 from the Rural General Practice Grants Program.  This federal government grant is aimed at assisting in providing additional space to increase local health services and teaching opportunities for GP Registrars and medical students within Manjimup. Since our opening 2 years ago, we have already had many GP Registrars/medical students.  We are very excited about receiving this grant that will allow us to increase our involvement in training GPs to see what a wonderful area and community Manjimup is.

When Is The Right Time For A Flu Vaccine?

April 16, 2017

According to the latest evidence, the preferred time in WA is from May to mid-June. Protection from the vaccine starts to decrease from 3-4 months and for WA the flu season is generally August. There are exceptions. People should be vaccinated if travelling to areas where there is an earlier flu season (this includes northern WA) and pregnant women (check with your GP).
FREE government funded vaccines are available under the Immunise Australia Program to:

➢ Anyone aged 65 years and over
➢ All children aged between six months and less than 5 years
➢ ATSI people aged 15 years and over
➢ Pregnant women
➢ Anyone with a pre-existing medical condition that can lead to severe influenza (check with your GP).
Southern Forests Medical Centre offers a walk-in service for flu vaccines. If you do not meet the requirements for a free flu vaccine, the cost is $14.95 (including GST). Private flu vaccines are now available. Please phone 9777 2293 for more information.

What Are Your New Year's Resolutions?

January 03, 2017

Each January, many health and wellness resolutions are made.  Big goals are set like losing weight, exercise more, quit smoking, eat healthy and taking better care of your health.  The problem with broad goals is simply that – they are too difficult to achieve.  Setting more specific resolutions have a better chance of success.

Southern Forests Medical Centre offers a wide range of services that may help you achieve this. A GP can counsel on a range of health subjects including how to quit smoking, weight loss or be able to advise you of other health professionals that could guide you on achieving your goals. We also offer a range of preventative health clinics including skin cancer checks, health assessments, diabetes education, asthma monitoring, cancer screening and coordinated management plans.

Set your resolutions, book an appointment (9777 2293) to discuss any health goals with your GP and put the plan into action.  Have a very Happy and Healthy 2017!
